CD-ROM Review: NETWORK CD Vol 2
BY: Wierd Science
Although the CD is more than 2 years old, it is still readily on sale today,
and still as useful as ever.
Primarily designed as a CD to connect an Amiga to a CD³². You can buy a
package from Wierd Science, which also includes a lead to connect from the
CD³²s AUX port, to a standard Serial port on an Amiga.
The package comes with the Network 2 CD, and a floppy disk to use in your
Amiga. You connect the lead, turn on the CD³², insert the CD-ROM, and leave
it to boot up by itself, then double click the REMOTE SENDER icon on the
Amiga's disk, and then click your chosen speed. The Amiga will
automatically start the CD³²s software via the serial port, and will launch
SERNET by itself, and a program called NETKEYS.
So now you can use the CD³² like a normal Amiga! Move the mouse on the
Amiga, off the edge of the screen, and it will switch control to the CD³²,
and now you can use the Amiga's keyboard and mouse to remotely control the
CD³², and it works very well (although the mouse is a bit jerky, it's better
to unplug the Amiga's mouse and plug it into the CD³²), and you can also use
the Amiga's disk drives on the CD³², hard disks and floppy drives! Makes
the machine a good second alternative to a CD-ROM equipt A1200. Very good
if you only have an A500+/600 and a CD³². The floppy disk requires WB2 or
above.
If you want to use a CDTV with your Amiga, get hold of Network CD Vol 1, as
that is the disc for the CDTV, Vol 2 is for the CD³² only. As the Sernet
program is quite small, there is lots to fill up the CD, loads of pictures,
game demos (Gloom demo is on here, it's very good), some internet tools
(mosaic is there), and LOADS of DMS files from a PD library, with HUNDREDS
of utilities to use on the Amiga. Literally everything! Loads of Modules
as well for your listening pleasure, and the full Workbench 3.1 install.
The CD is very fast, taking only 45 seconds to boot up the CD³², which is a
great improvement over the CDTV version. Definately recommended if you want
to connect your CD³² to an Amiga. Top disc!
